How to use DoorDash Scan Stickers to help prevent missing drinks

Missing drinks are one of the most common customer complaints in delivery — and they can result in your store getting charged, even when your team did everything right. DoorDash Scan Stickers are designed to fix that. Here's how they work, how to use them correctly, and what they mean for your business.

What Are DoorDash Scan Stickers?

DoorDash Scan Stickers are small adhesive labels you place on drinks before handing off a DoorDash order to a Dasher (the delivery person picking up the order). When the Dasher scans the sticker using their app, it creates a digital record confirming that the drink was picked up — a chain of custody that protects both your store and your customers.

Think of it like a receipt for each individual drink. If a customer later says their drink is missing, DoorDash can check the scan record. If the Dasher confirms pickup, your store won't be held responsible for the error.

Which Orders Need a Sticker?

Only DoorDash orders that include a drink require a sticker. If an order doesn't have a drink, no sticker is needed.

How to Place the Stickers Correctly

Getting the placement right takes about two seconds, but it matters for the Dasher to be able to scan successfully.

Use one sticker per drink. If an order has three drinks, use three stickers — one on each.

Place stickers in a visible spot. Good options include:

  • Directly on the drink cup or lid

  • On the bag holding the drinks, near the receipt

Keep stickers flat and easy to scan. Don't bend, fold, or tape over them, and don't overlap stickers or place them on top of the receipt on the bag.

Quick Reference: Dos and Don'ts

Do:

  • Use one sticker per drink

  • Place stickers flat and visible — on the cup, lid, or drink bag near the receipt

  • Add a sticker if a Dasher asks for one

Don't:

  • Overlap stickers or place them on top of the receipt

  • Bend, fold, or tape over stickers

  • Worry about scanning anything yourself — that's the Dasher's job

What the Dasher Will Do

Most of the time, you don't need to do anything special with the Dasher. They'll scan the stickers themselves using their DoorDash app. If they ask where a sticker is, just point it out — you don't need to scan anything yourself.

If a Dasher mentions that the NFC tap (the phone's contactless feature used to scan the sticker) isn't working, that's something they'll handle on their end. Their app has a backup option so the order can still proceed. You don't need to troubleshoot their device.

Does Anything Change on Your Tablet or POS?

No. You don't need to update any settings or change how you process orders on your tablet or POS system. The only difference in your workflow is placing the sticker before handing off drinks.

What Happens If You Forget a Sticker?

If a sticker gets missed, the Dasher can ask you to add one before they leave. Go ahead and place the sticker at that point — it still gives you the chain of custody you need.

How This Protects Your Store

When a customer reports a missing drink, DoorDash reviews the scan record for that order. If the Dasher scanned the sticker and confirmed pickup, your store won't be charged for the error. Without the sticker and scan, it's much harder to verify what happened — which is why placing them consistently on every drink order matters.

Sticker Supply and Restocking

Each roll contains approximately 200 stickers. DoorDash monitors usage and will send a new supply before you run out, so you don't need to track inventory. You can order more stickers from the Merchant portal too.

Merchant Portal Control

The Merchant Portal is your one stop shop for managing the new flow. You can start and pause the flow as needed. You can also order more stickers if needed.

Is This a Permanent Change?

The program is currently running as a four-week pilot. Depending on how it goes, it may be extended.

Does This Affect the Customer's Experience?

No. Customers won't notice any difference. Their ordering process, delivery tracking, and support experience stay exactly the same.
